Review: Elf on a Shelf Writing Center Supplies and Activities on Teachers Pay Teachers

The Elf on a Shelf writing center supply and activity pack is a premium download from Teachers Pay Teachers. The packet offers a fun set of activities and printable materials that revolve around the recently revamped Elf on the Shelf Christmas tradition. There are 32 pages packed with writing center-appropriate activities for young writers with varying degree of skill.

Most of the activities in the download encourage some form of creative nonfiction writing. There are lists to make – both wish lists and ideas for ways to help others – and several different types of stationery for kids to write letters to their elves. There are also activities that encourage children to read while they’re away from school on winter break. Several of these activities are available in both black/white and color copies. The black/white ones have plenty of “white space” where kids could draw or color their own ideas, and the color pages are bright and festive.

Additionally, the packet comes with a few pages for children to write their own structured poetry. There are planning pages and then a final page for each of two acrostic poems, and a brief but sufficient introduction to a simple 5-line poem. The 5-line poem also has two worksheets, one for a draft and the other for a final copy.

Finally, there’s a series of creative writing prompts pertaining to elves to get children engaged in writing about a subject that presumably interests them. The prompts cover all sorts of Elf-related topics, from adventures at the North Pole to baking days with Mrs. Claus to accounts of good behavior.

All in all, the Elf on a Shelf writing center supplies and activity packet offers a wide assortment of activities to keep kids creatively engaged
