Free Writing Prompts

If you need writing ideas and you need them fast, this free writing prompts list will act as a crash course to finding the nearly 2,000 freewriting, creative writing, character writing and other types of prompts on this website. Each day I'm getting closer and closer to 200 pages of prompts on this site, each with 10 to 20 writing prompts and I'd like to share them with you for free.

Some of my most popular prompts are those that teachers use for their students in elementary school and beyond. Here are some freewriting prompts for first grade, second gradethird gradefourth grade and love and about death. For prompts that are a little less serious, you can always check out my pages for romantic comedy and camping.

Some of the most popular free writing prompts pages on this site have to do with holidays. For instance, this October, the most popular page on my site by far was my Halloween writing prompts page. Other holiday pages that have been extremely well-traveled include my pages aboutthanksgivingchristmas and birthdays.

I've also started a new section of the website in preparation for a new book of character writing prompts. These prompts are meant to help writers to craft characters by using ideas for fully-rounded characters from all walks of life. If you find your characters are getting a bit stale, try out these character ideas related to heroesnerds, geeks and dweebs, exes and ghouls, ghosts and spirits.

If you're the kind of person who wants all of your prompts in one place, I've created several books that compile some of my prompts lists into digital or paperback form. My first book, 1,000 Creative Writing Prompts: Ideas for Blogs, Scripts, Stories and More has sold over 6,000 copies and has been a big factor in keeping this site alive. My other writing prompts book, 500 Writing Prompts for Kids is a helpful resource for teachers as well as students. In November 2011, I will be releasing 1,000 Character Writing Prompts, Part 1 as a sort of natural sequel to 1,000 Creative Writing Prompts.

I hope you've enjoyed my free writing prompts. Feel free to drop me a message sometimes on the Contact Me page if you have any questions about writing prompts.
