Summer Nights

by Amanda Kopacelli

We all dream of having an epic vacation or adventure. We yearn for an escapade that we can recount many years from now with glee and boast unyieldingly about in our immediate social circles. Personally, life to me is all about making progress and passing on knowledge and growth while actively exploring and enjoying your surroundings. I also happen to love travelling, especially by sea. Therefore, it makes sense that the perfect crazy summer adventure would likely happen aboard a cruise ship of some kind. I think it would be fantastic if, while on the cruise, I met a mysterious stranger from a far away country which remained undisclosed. This person and I decided to not exchange names or personal details of any kind, but rather live for the moment and merely enjoy each other’s company aboard the ship. He would go snorkeling with me and we would share our first romantic kiss under the water with the moonlight glinting off the surface of the sea. We would emerge from the water, silently and unnoticed. The next morning, we would masquerade as a wealthy couple from Estonia and learn as much as we could about all of the passengers and their life journeys. I would make it a point to learn at least one word from each new language I encountered during our talks with these people. On the last day of the cruise, he would give me a piece of paper with an address and a time. If I decided I wanted to run away with him permanently, that would be my chance. It is two weeks away. I have yet to make up my mind. My friends know something has happened, and have been pestering me non-stop. I sated their curiosity somewhat by telling them I met a boy and we kissed, but nothing more. If I am gone this time next Saturday, you will know that I have indeed lived out the most secret and daring adventure of my life yet, all for a shot at a thing called love. If you find this note, then I am relieved that someone now knows. But as for now, I’m ok keeping this my little secret.
