Review: Word Work Vocabulary Packet on Teachers Pay Teachers

The Word Work Vocabulary Packet is a free download available on Teachers Pay Teachers. The packet is an in-depth activity that helps students build their vocabulary by studying words with short and long vowel sounds. The lessons incorporate different academic skills to reinforce the new vocabulary words. Students will learn 50 vocabulary words with these lessons.

The vocabulary words in these lessons are divided into two main sections – words with long vowel sounds and words with short vowels. Activities follow reinforcing each group of words, involving practice reading, writing, and illustrating. Each vowel sound has two pages of activities – one page that focuses on the individual word, and a second page that uses words together to build sentences. Students rewrite and illustrate each vocabulary word, and then they combine all the words on one page (5 words a page) to create a sentence and related drawing. The real benefit of the second page of the activity is that kids who are very young writers (or even ESL students who are just beginning to learn English) have the opportunity to practice a very simple form of creative writing.

These lessons are presented in a format that would easily be copied and distributed, without much if any adjustment necessary on the teacher’s part. They are open-ended enough to support other lesson plans and activities regarding vowel sounds, but they contain enough content and instruction to stand alone if preferred.
