I think that school is harder in some ways because you don't see the full benefit until after you've finished.
You spend at the a certain amount time, whether it's short term(a month or more),medium(two or four years)or you go for that brass ring and stay in school for 8 or more years. Grad school is especially harder because not only does the coursework gets harder, but the cost for furthering your education keeps rising. What makes it so bad is that a percentage of graduates put all that hard work in just to receive that dreaded email or letter that says they weren't selected for hiring.

Though work is easier than getting an education it's not by much. Really, it depends on the type of job and the individual performing it. Something physical(tire builders, construction work and any other type of blue collar work) will leave you feeling like you been hit by bus. You'll have muscles that you didn't even know existed hurting, it will have you eating Motrin like candy. Even with the most experience worker, some jobs your body might never get used to. Other jobs is mentally taxing like engineers, programmers or any other occupations where you have to perform tedious repetitive work and calculations. In some cases, feeling mentally drained can be a lot worse than having a bad back.
All in all most people that go to college is because they want a better job, with decent pay. It’s because of the jobs they were doing beforehand that fueled their need to pursue higher education in the first place. The only problem is that, unless your living at home fresh out of high school, most people have to balance school because they want a better job but they have to work because they have to support themselves and/or a family. While I said school is a little harder to do, doing them together is extremely difficult. Both can be demanding which means long hours of working and studying on very little sleep. Add a family to the mix and it can feel like pushing a boulder up a mountain.
